Meet the Team: Team Members

DR. DAVID GARMIRE

Faculty Advisor

David G. Garmire holds B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University in May 2000 (with university and college honors), and a Ph.D. in EECS at the University of California at Berkeley in September 2007 with a certificate in Management of Technology from the Haas School of Business. From 2007 to 2008, he was a Postdoc Researcher at the Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center. From 2008 to 2014, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he has been an Associate Professor since 2014. His research focuses on electrophysical devices such as micro/nanoelectromechanical Systems (M/NEMS), sustainability, and biomedical devices. The research is funded in part by the Department of Navy, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the National Institute of Health, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Dr. Garmire received the UH System Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching, the UH System Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate teaching, the Ross N Tucker Award for advancing semiconductor technology, the Sevin Rosen Funds Award for Innovation, the National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Education invited attendee, and the National Academy of Inventors Distinguished Member Award.

TAMRA OYAMA

Graduate Student Mentor

Tamra K. Oyama was born in Ewa Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA in 1995. She received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2017. She is currently working towards her M.S. degree in electrical engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is expected to graduate in 2019.
In 2017 she completed two Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) Bluetooth projects. She was an Undergraduate Research Assistant in 2017 for the Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology Raman Systems and Laboratories and continues to do work there in her graduate school career. She is graduate research assistant for the Electrical Engineering department.
Ms. Oyama's research interests include sensors, Bluetooth, and spectroscopy. She is working on a NSF funded project to develop an autonomous water monitoring system under Dr. David Garmire. Her other projects involve developing a fluorescence spectroscopy system under Dr. Anupam Misra and working on Bluetooth hospital devices.
